With Ryanair now flying from Bournemouth to Girona, it is an excellent destination for a relatively stress-free mini-break or holiday. Bournemouth airport is small with limited number of flights per day so easier to manage than the larger international airports.
Girona is a great city in the north of Spain, just below the French border. It is home to some fabulous restaurants including El Cellar de Can Roca. We, however headed to the coast, to the town of Begur. Having inter-railed there many moons ago, the town and its coastal village were always somewhere I wanted to return. In the last twenty years, it has definitely become more developed but one area which was greatly appreciated was the amazing coastal paths available to walk. Some parts of the path were more of a scrabble but there was long sections which had definitely been built with walkers in mind.
We stayed at the delightful Hostal Ses Negres, a stone's throw from the beach at Sa Riera - close to Begur. A low-key laid back hostel/hotel which also has a terrace restaurant on the sand.
From Sa Riera we walked along the footpath to a beautiful cove; Aiguafreda. A few sections were a bit hairy but a beautiful walk nonetheless. Once we arrived at Aiguafreda, we stumbled across the fantastic Hostal Sa Rascassa, in time for Sunday lunch. A glorious small hotel by the sea serving some brilliant food.
