Raffia Handmade Bird Houses

The Senegalese bird house is woven by artisans in Dakar, Senegal. The structure is woven from raffia palm fibres, giving it a warm golden-brown colour and a soft, textured surface. The bamboo shoots form the frame — thin, smooth, and strong — creating a lightweight yet sturdy skeleton for the house. The shape is often rounded or gourd-like, tapering slightly at the top with a small perch or opening near the front for the birds to enter.
The raffia is tightly plaited or wrapped around the bamboo, in decorative patterns, and the roof may be thatched or domed, allowing rain to slide off easily. It’s entirely natural, breathable, and blends beautifully with its surroundings.
