Woven Wall Platter - SmallThe Basket Room
- Wall Platter with loop for hanging

This lovely wall basket has been woven by one of a group of female weavers living on the foothills of the Rwenzori mountains in Uganda. Some of the ladies were widowed by the Allied Democratic Forces war of the 90’s, and others were left homeless. In 2003 they decided to mobilise to see how they could better sustain themselves and their children. They found that the traditional handicraft of basket weaving was the best way of earning a sustainable living.
The striking basket is woven from raffia and banana leaf stem, featuring a monochrome floral central design surrounded by a radial pattern in pink, green and blue. It is striking hung alone on a wall and impressive in a group wall arrangement, these shallow woven baskets can also be used for fruit and bread, or for displaying jewellery, soaps or hand towels. Traditionally, these baskets were (and are still) used for serving a local meal called Akaro (mingled millet flour) and they’re also used in wedding ceremonies in parts of Uganda.
Through the production and sales of these baskets, these women’s children can access a better education. In bringing a wage home, women are finding themselves in a more equal partnership at home. These baskets empower women, and in purchasing one for your home, you support this important work.
