Kenyan Basket: MediumFrom Afar
This beautiful handmade baskets come from Kasigau, Kenya - home to many elephants, beautiful baobab trees and countless cows. In this arid, rural area there are a number of talented weaving groups which vary in size and weaving styles from bright geometric and bold stripes to earthy traditional patterns. Each basket is woven with love and care and has its own unique character - no basket is the exact same shape, size or colour. Most of the weavers are women and subsistence farmers. When the rains are too late or don't come at all, the crops fail which is devastating.
In these desperate times, many people turn to poaching or charcoal burning as a quick source of income.
Your purchase of this basket is helping to reduce these harmful practices by supporting a sustainable alternative revenue stream for these communities. In turn you are also helping to preserve the traditional craft of weaving.
