These woven bread baskets are truly one-of-a-kind, woven by a female weaver working in an extremely skilled cooperative in Kenya’s Coastal Region. So creative is this group of weavers that we leave the designs process to them, giving them free rein with colours and patterns. Sisal grass is hand stripped using wooden tools and bare feet, and then it is hand rolled on the thighs before being dyed in vats of boiling water.
Farming communities struggle produce enough harvest to meet their family’s basic needs consistently throughout the year. Weaving these bread baskets as part of a cooperative enables these craftswomen to earn a fair and flexible second income during dry seasons. Each unique woven basket comes with a thank you card from the cooperative who made it.
